Your Television Is Watching You???

How much information do you want advertisers to have about you? What are the benefits and drawbacks for you of making that information available? How might the information benefit advertisers?

i dont think i like the fact that the t.v. company's are allowed to check and see what our prescriptions are and what we like to watch just so they can put those ads on our t.v. i mean yeah it would be nice to see the things that we want to but they shouldnt have to go through are life to see what those things are.

I would want them to know information about me but not a lot. Because if they know good information about you that is good but if they know your whole life story thats a little to much so i feel like a little bit is good but not to much. Thats whats wrong with everyone today they let everyone know everything about themselves.

Plewis said...

I think its kind of cool , they just wanna know what movies , channels , ads. on t.v. we like , things that relate to yourself as a person , me myself think the company is doing just fine cause i like some what of the movies & channels they play , but then again it gets personal if they are to much i your business the world today need to learn how to mind there own...

i think that it is good that they are monitoring what we watch so that we can watch more shows that we like to watch, but i think it is also that it is kind of weird that they know all that info about use. i think that technology is getting way to smart

Anonymous said...

I dont see anything wrong with it? The purpose is to show us what we want. Its not they have cameras in the t.v.s to personally watch us. Thats doing too much. They have to keep up with the times and if thats by showing us what we want to see then I don't have an issue with that at al.

I don't want advertisers to have that much information about me, it is sort of creepy. They might as well look through the window ! Benefits are they could advertise shows or products that you are actually interested in and not annoying things. A drawback is that you could leave the TV on while you are not at home and strange things will be advertised when you are watching TV. The information benefits advertisers because they know what products to advertise to certain people.

i dont like the t.v companies know what i like to watch by spying on me why cant they do the non personal space thing and send a servey to thier customers.

Pat Pat Hill 5 said...

i think it would fine for them to know alittle about me so they could make t.v. more interesting for me , but im not goonna let them know where i live or anything crazy like that . but i guess it could be a good thing .

I dont want any advertisers to have any information about me. Its there job to make things interesting not by seeing what i subscribe into. I rarely watch tv. I work & school , work & school. The tv may be on when im sleep but i never actually tune in ! It could benefit them by knowing what to put out there but the should know already. Just sayin'

chelseadanielle13 said...

i dont like the idea of company's knowing everything i do but they could survey everybody to see what they watch

JuliusWilliams6 said...

I think its a good but I don't want the advertisers to know every single detail about me cause if they do know all those details then thats way too much information cause thats none of their business.

Kelley Mae 6 said...

I think the idea of the t.v. company, looking into our personal life shouldn't be allowed. That's our business and not there's. A survey old probably be okay. But not without our permission.

Stacy Mullins6 said...

I wouldn't want them knowing to much about me. Some info is ok so they could put shows on TV that i want to see. I don't watch shows that i don like so its a good but bad thing at the same time.

frongia1 said...

I don't really care about how much information that the advertisers have about me. I don't care because the more they know about me the more they will show me advertisements of products that I actually like and would consider buying rather than of products that don't even interest me. Information might benefit advertisers because it will help them to know what commercials to show on what channels. This is used all the time like you would never see a commercial for a barbie doll on ESPN. Marketers know that little Girls are not going to be watching ESPN.

Chancelor` said...

Ok just for the record this article about tv's watching you is pretty freaky.Data-gathering and technology companies are aggressively matching people's TV-viewing behavior with other personal data—in some cases, prescription-drug records obtained from insurers—and using it to help advertisers buy ads targeted to shows watched by certain kinds of people.

rkessler13 said...

I think that it is a good idea but, they should not try to find out any more than they have too. It would be awesome to have only the commercials that I wanted to see too.

Beth Cornele said...

It don't bother me that the t.v company's record what we watch. It's not like they can still our identity but seeing what we watch. and it would be good to see the things we want to watch. the benefits of making this information available is that we might get to see more of that show depending on how much we watch it or something ?

Kyle Kaution Mobley said...

i dont watch t.v as much as the average, the shows i do watch is the shows most people my age would watch i guess, things like sports, funny shows ect. i think the fact that the people are basically watching what i am watching is vary weird i don't believe they should track that only when it comes to ratings on a television show

todjnemilton1 said...

i don't like how t.v. company's can look into what we like to watch and everything without our permission like its our business not theres like its not that much of a big deal really but just doing it is weird like why do they care. but on the other hand its a good thing so they can see how many people watch a certain show so they can either take it off or keep it on air.

cklapper said...

To me I think at TV company's should not be checking on us to see what we watch on TV because that is somewhat not cool. TV is for fun not for people to watch what we watch. If you want to know what kind of things we like just put random ad's on TV

amber.r1 said...

I think T.V company's should be aloud to know things like our prescriptions and what we like to watch because then certain shows we like will air more. If they didn't know then T.V company's would not know what shows were not getting alot of viewers so there would be no cuts and no new upcoming television shows. I think this is a great way to quietly communicate with there consumers.

andrewlykins10 said...

i dont want advertisers to know to much about me but its okay if they know a little bit about me. i think it would be kinda cool to see a ad on my tv just for me or a show that i would like to watch. i think this would be a good thing as long as they don't look to far into your life and know personal things to put an ad on TV.

Anonymous said...

I wouldn't want people to know my personal life, every move I make, or even everywhere I go. I know nobody does. But I would be perfectly fine for them to put up good basic facts about me, but not in a stalker kind of way. The benefits that I could get from having the viewers know some facts is that they'll know what kind of a person I am and my interests. If the people watching liked me or the things that I do, they could ask me to advertise for something that is closely related to what I am like, gain more money and I'd gain more popularity.

Anonymous said...

I don't really care if they know "so much" about me and my information. Everything i watch is so diverse and i rarely ever watch the commercials because i have DVR. So if they are trying to get me to buy things, it's not happening. Plus, if i do see something, I don't end up getting it. I think it is kind of creepy though that they search through our television records to see what we would be interested in.

Sowens1 said...

This technology is definitely benefitting the tv companies. It doesn't bother me that they can tune in and see what I'm watching. It doesn't harm me in anyway. if anything, it will make tv more interesting for me. I see this as just another way of polling everyone to see what they're interested in.

Anonymous said...

I dont like that t.v companies can see what we are watching. But i do think its kinda cool to know how the companies do that just by what we watch

I personally don't have a problem with t.v. company's knowing what shows I am watching. I feel that it would be a benefit because they could show commercials of advertisements of products that would actually interest me. The only drawback would be that I would see things on commercials and want to buy them.

Anonymous said...

I think that this is cool because the company can show ads about movies, shows, and channels that you would be interested in. But some people out there like thier privacy, so i think a survey would be the best thing for both sides

i think that i would prefer them know what i like to watch so that it could be on tv more but i would not want them goin thru everything ive watched or done in order to find that out i would rather them survey people so that they can see what we would rather watch instead of spying on us

brooke wolfe5 said...

The only thing i would want advertisers to know about me is the advertisements that show up on my tv the most not no personal information. I'm sure most people don't want advertisers to know personal stuff about them. thats creepy.. the benefits are that if they know what advertisements i watch then they could show them more & get more attention towards that specific item. the drawbacks are that some other advertisements wont get their product shown on tv as often as the others.

Tiara Coldiron 5 said...

I don't want them to know to much about me somethings are fine but then some are personal. I like them to put things on tv that i would like to watch. I think they are doing a good job because some shows are things that relate to you as a person.

i like the fact that advertisers know what we like to watch, because it makes watching tv more interesting when theres actually commercials and shows we like to watch insted of flipping threw channels and not finding anything we like.

marquise5 said...

there is lots of drawbacks because some people works to hard to create a commercial. they try to push to hard to make sells. All you have to do is get the main out of it and not all the extra things they explain. i wouldn't put all my business out there only about my star life.

Personally i would not want any advertisers knowing any thing about me it's not things about me that make tv interesting it's their job to make it more interesting not mine. It's ok to get some sort of ideas but they don't need to know about people to make it interesting.... yes i like my shoes and stuff but i don't have a problem with the schedule they have for it to come on because in the mean time i could be doing something else and of course there is a such thing as movies!!!!!

mknight5 said...

i think its weird and i would not want them to have any information about me. because its none of their business. yeah its nice to have stuff on that interests you, but i hardly even watch tv. so it really doesnt to me.

aquilese4 said...

I don't want advertisers to have that much information about me cause i think it would be sort of weird. To much info is not good i wouldn't and couldn't give them all my info. Technology is getting smarter each month and year. I think as tech gets smarter then that means good news for the future and more. Certain people dont even listen to the advertisement sometimes i hope people at them casue that would help our country....

AntonioW5th said...

I don't necessarily want advertisers to have a lot of information about me. The benefits and drawbacks for me making that information available would probably be none, but the drawbacks are that they would know to much information about me, they could know where I live and other information that is important. I think the information wouldn't be that important for them, and it wouldn't really benefit them either.

I like how people in the industry. Are trying to relate to what we watch. And that now people are actually paying attention, to what they are broadcasting. I think now the people are going to buy more products. And that is good for the producers.

I think that t.v. company's should not look into our personal lifes. I don't care if they want to put shows on that i want to see or not. I barely watch t.v. anyway so i'd rather them not know anything about me.

Austin.Reece6 said...

You know, this to me is like someone you dont know just walking into your house uninvited. Thats wrong right? well this is just the same thing only they found a different way to do this, and not get in trouble. I think the fact of them trying to put commericals in front of you is just wrong. I do not know how good those commericals work but i have never bought anything from those so, invasion of privacy? i think so. this should not be allowed.

This is the sputnik moment - Tracey Scheppach

Companies pay attention to who's watching what and when they're watching it. The reason they do it is to see who's interested and hooked on certain things. For example, if disney sees that 70% of kids prefer Wizards of Waverley Place over Shake it up, they will sell more Wizards of Waverley Place products such as back packs and clothing.

i find it kinda creepy that television companies can access your subscriptions and what not..
i think its an invasion of privacy because they don't need to know all that just for all advertisements .
its just for their benefits and i really don't think its necessary.
i understand them watching over the ratings to find out what most people like to watch,
but digging that far into peoples lives to look through their stuff..

donaldcrew6 said...

I don't think that people should be able to see what you watch on t.v. because it does not matter what you do that is part of your personal life it should not matter what you look at. They could go to jail for monitoring you on charges such as invasion of privacy.

jon adams6 said...

i think the idea would be great but at the same time it would be weird to see to see the ad almost all the time...

the fact that tv companys are watching what i do pretty much just pisses me off. they can find other ways to make money other then watching somebody all day.

DylanDunn6 said...

i dont think that tv companies are watching what i do is messed up. What people do in their life is their choice and they shouldn't be watched 24/7, honestly that sounds really annoying and would make me mad.

logansturgell said...

i do not like being monitored , we should have a freedom to watch what we want without a company checking what we watch just to be interupted by lame commercials. we like t.v. to entertain and with them adding more commercials its boring people. that's why they made hulu , because there are geniuses out there who want us to be able to watch what we want with limited interuptions! :)

latrelldavis2 said...

i dont think it is too big of a deal. you dont have to flip thru the channels if they already know what you like. so i think its okay and it benefits the company and you. also it could get creepy if they dig to deep in your personal life. but if the dont dig to deep then it dont mind. it kind of bothers me that they can actually do that though.

Dineesia Mack 6 said...

I think it is both good and a bad thing.
Its good because they actually know what we like and what they should be showing us about, but then again its not good because sometimes we don't even like some of the things we watch it may just be there just because.

johnna said...

i don't care for this idea to much, not for the people watching it like me but the companies trying to make something with their ads because this is what people usually want yes not to watch commericals about things YOU don't care about, but if they keep showing it how it is then they will be able to spread it nationwide instead of just to certain places or certain people can see more than what they usually do.

Djook said...

i dont think t.v should see what you watch, in some cases it's good but in others it's bad. the companys seem to make t.v all about commercials now, i hate watching comercials and most people have DVR now were they just fwd.... so it makes it kind of pointless and i think it's an invasion on privacy.

beckylykins said...

I would not want the advertisers on television to know anything about me. I want that because I know what i want, and I don't need the television to tell me that. I don't watch much television anyways, but when i do watch, the advertsments make me mad. I'm there for shows, not commercials.
