Is Cursive Writing a Skill Your Generation Needs?

Read this article about cursive writing.   The article points out arguments from both sides about this skill and its importance.  What are your thoughts?  Do people in today's world need this skill? or do you support the philosophy that this is a skill that just needs to fade away?

This article is due, September 30th.

".. the hand-wringing about handwriting is overdone. " i agree with this 100% because i think cursive writing is just as good as print because for one it gets little kids confused when they first start doing it and a lot of people cant even really write good in cursive, but some people like to write in cursive before fine print and thats just another thing people do differently in the world.

I think that people should learn to write and read in cursive. Mostly because if you run into somebody like at work or school that does write in cursive and you can't read it you might just be in trouble. Also when you have to sign something it has to be in cursive. I learned how to write in it in elementry school but forget how to write a lot of the letters. I do not support the philosophy that this is a skill that just needs to fade away because of the reasons I stated.

I agree with this article i think that cursive writing should no longer be a thing kids need to learn. I feel like in the future we will use computers for everything and not have to actually hand right anything. This can be a bad thing because people cant have there own individual hand signature. Alot of people just struggle with cursive when there is no need to because like the article says many have not used it since the year they learned it.

I think that it is not a skill that we necessarily need because it is not used often. The only time we use cursive is for signing checks or for signing agreements or filling out applications. Other than those few times, cursive is not something you regularly use. Plus a lot of cursive writing in unclear and hard to read. Printing is just more simple and easy to read and write. Cursive takes a lot of practice. I think that maybe if schools had enforced learning cursive handwriting more often, then it would be something of use. But a lot of schools only taught it in a certain grade and then after that we never used it. Or at least that's how it was in my case. I think a lot of people don't right in cursive because it's a lot of work but I do think everyone should at least know how to write their name in cursive because that is something they will use in life.

i think that its a good thing to know cursive but i dont believe that its a thing that you have to know... i learned cursive in elementary school and have for the most part for gotten all of it.. we dont use it anymore and only a select few of my teachers use it and i can read what they write. i can write my signature and thats about it. i think the last time i used cursive was in 8th grade writing definitions in history for extra credit.. i believe that cursive writing is dated and there is really no point in using it anymore...

i think that it should be a choice to write in cursive or not but for are test we should write in cursive because it will help us in life like get a job or better education and better all around in are classes

I think handwriting is better , cursive is hard to teach with children with ah disable ness , & most people just don't catch on fast enough , but to most cursive is is good fast & easy , makes things look better on ah piece of paper but i DISAGREE cause the disable can't write in cursive or just students that don't catch on....

i agree it shouldnt matter which type we use we should able to use either on things that we sign for because some people cannot use cursive

wyattc27 said...

i think that students should have to practice cursive in school cause in life you will need to be able to write in cursive. like for instance your signature, a check and just all kinds of things, if the school teaches and helps the kids practice it then we will be ready for it in the future when we need it.

daiquanewhite4 said...

I think that it should be a choice to write in cursive or not. i also think that we should be made to write in cursive now and then, because you have to write in cursive when you sign things and also because it looks nice. we also need to know cursive so that we can be able to read cursive for when somebody is writing in cursive

rkessler13 said...

People should be able to both read and write in cursive because if the person don't know how to do that then they will never know to sign their own name. Also, that if you get a good job somewhere most things that you will end up reading will be in cursive and if you can't understand it then you will not be able to work at that place.

I believe people still need cursive in todays society. Like I have seen people to go give their signatures and cant because they dont know how to write in cursive. I remember in Elementary school learning and its helped me out a lot. So yes i do believe people need it in todays society everyone needs to know how to write in cursive.

marykatew4 said...

I think people still need the skill to write in print and in cursive. One of the teachers said she could not read the 5th graders handwriting, I think that is a very young age and their writing is changing. I know I do not write the same as I did in 5th grade. Students do need to have good hand writing for applications and tests and other things and life. Yes they need the computer skills but I believe students should still work on good handwriting and some cursive.

cursive is more how you make your letters, even though they teach you how to do it when your little many schools now don't even teach it to this day. Cursive is just as good as print and print is a little more ledgiable. its all your prefreance i guess, but companys shouldn't damand cursive when they don't even teach it now.

chanel white said...

I truly think cursive handwriting should be thought more. cursive is just as simple as print. most people are use to cursive anyways. if you were taught young then you should know every letter in cursive off the back of your head.

I think that it is a dying art. I mean, its good to know it. I have two teachers who write in cursive and I feel dumb because I legitimately cannot read cursive no matter what. I think this generation and MAYBE a little bit onto the next one should at least know how to read cursive so they don't end up like me asking friends to read the wall for them.

I think that people should be able to read and write using either cursive or print. People in todays world need to know cursive because at jobs or in schools their will be people that write in cursive and you would be in trouble if you can't understand it. Also all signatures have to be in cursive like signing your checks. I do agree with the philosophy of that cursive is a skill that just needs to fade away because I hate writing in cursive and i think that it is hard to read.

I think that people should learn how to read and write in cursive because when you are out in the real world out working and things people might write in cursive and if you cant read or write in cursive then you might be in trouble. But i don't think that they should have to at a young age because when they get older they might not remember how to. I don't like cursive writing at all. Its been awhile since i have learned it.

Kiara Williams P.5(KNOWSHECUTE_xo) said...

I think cursive writing isn't necessarily needed, but it needs to be taught. For one, you have certain individuals who still and has always used cursive writing. If cursive writing isn't taught, then how would people be able to read what somebody is writing? Cursive writing is very tricky and some of the ways the letters are wrote can confuse you. So for that being said cursive shouldn't be a necessity as in you must write in cursive. But you have to know it to be able to read it.

Austen Moore #5 said...

I think people should use cursive.. But it's just like when people do languages some people just do that so they can get a better diploma.. You will have to use cursive for signing applications everybody uses cursive..So overall i think it's good to use this type of writing. It's good to express yourself writing in different ways.

TylerThaCreator said...

I think that people should learn to read an write in cursive at an early age, because you never know what type of situation youll be in that your in need of knowin cursive handwritting. But i think you should have a choice to either write in fine print or cursive, you just probably know how to do both just in case.

kenyap,5 said...

I agree with this article I think it's confusing to a child when they go to school and spend time trying to write a different when they learned to write in print. I have not wrote in cursive since 4th grade. I personally think it is not necessary. You only learn it for a while then forget it. So I do agree with this article

mknight5 said...

i think that people should be able to read and write in cursive because you might run into someone that only writes in cursive and you might not be able to read it. but then again, i feel like it would be pointless for kids in elementary school now to learn it because technology is pretty much used for everything now and thats all we will probably use in the future.

i think people should still have to learn this because i had to so they should to and how else would u get ur signature

AntonioW5th said...

My thoughts about the article are that cursive handwriting really doesn't worry me that much, nor has it even really came to mind for me to write in cursive. People in this world today sometimes do needs to know how to write in cursive just to put it on a document or something. But I also do believe that cursive handwriting does need to fade away(In some cases).

Brian Moyer 5 said...

I write in both cursive and print. The reason no one can write in cursive is because their second, third, or fourth grade teacher told them that they will use it in middle school but they never do. Cursive writing is as easy as print.

marquise5 said...

Cursive writing is a very important aspect of life because when you have to sign things in the future like contracts you want to be the only one that create things like that so you have your identity stolen. Thats like your own personal stamp. TGOD

i think everyone should know how to write in cursive. its a handwriting skill. yes, it can be difficult in some letters or even all letters for some people. later in life though , it can hurt you if you dont know cursive because you have alot of stuff to sign and they want your signature & to print it , so yea i think cursive writing should be taught as much as handwriting. (:

elizabeth martinez5 said...

Mostly alot of people write in Cursive but i think 100% not all people should. Printing is more easy for other people and like me. But i also write in cursive not that much only when i need it. people that don't know cursive should lean. i agree with that we all need to use cursive some day in life.

TShields5 said...

Cursive writing not really that important, i dont think people should learn how to curstive. Its good to know cursive writing but its not important, but i do think people should learn how to have perfect hand writing

i think people should learn how to do cursive & read it also. Most people do & if you cant read their handwriting i think there going to look at you funny because you cant read or write cursive i learned to do cursive in like 3rd grade, something like that. to be honest i cant write cursive very well.. but i think it should be used. So we can have neat hand-writing.

my thoughts on this is that it doesnt matter how you write.and i agre to both it is a good skill to learn but it not that needed...

Well... I feel like we shouldn't need cursive writing anymore because they only taught me how to write it in the 3rd grade , then after that I never learned how to write it again so yeah its pointless for us to learn cursive writing if we are never going to have to use it.

Stacy Mullins6 said...

Cursive writing is not that important because we already have a form of writing so need to master another. But then again knowing how to read it might be important because if your teacher at school or manager at work writes in cursive and you cant read it then your stuck. so to me it goes both ways.

Logan Miller 6 said...

I don't think you really need to know cursive writing unless it's you're signature. Printing is easier to read and thats how most people write anyway, cursive writing is not very important.

Austin.Reece6 said...

I can see what this is saying. The last time i practiced my cursive handwriting, was about 6 years ago. I can still write in cursive but dont do it as much and yes i can read cursive just cause i dont find it to hard. I think they would pay more attention to it cause i think its looks a lot more professional than just print. If we dont show it to our future population a.k.a the elementary, after so many years it will be gone and no one will know it. So i think its a good thing to teach kids.

To me cursive is sloppy, im not saying people who write in it is, im saying it looks sloppy too me. Print writing is much easier and neater too read for most people. I don't believe people NEED this "skill" But Im not saying its not a neat one too have. But me, personally, prefer print over cursive.

marawocher6 said...

i dont think we should have to learn how to write in cursive, i learned it when i was in elementary school but as i got older middle school & high school we just quit doing it, honestly as long as you know how to read it or can write it a little it doesnt have to be perfect then your fine .

jon adams6 said...

I think it's a must to know how to read and write in cursive. The generation that comes after me needs to learn this skill & that we should not let this to just fade off of the English Writing curriculum.

i think people should learn cursive because when you sign important things it has to be in cursive and there is a lot of people that write in cursive like teachers managers and bosses and you cant read what it says you could be in trouble

i can relate to this because i don't know how to write cursive much anymore and being able to write cursive is important for signing job applications letters and checks.

Anonymous said...

I think that cursive should be an option, you shouldn't have to write in cursive. When i was in elementary i wasn't taught how to write in cursive, although i know how to now, it is sloppy and most people can see what it says so i prefer writing in print.

beckylykins said...

I personally believe that everyone in school should learn to read and write in cursive because there are people out there who will still use this form of writing and if that person didnt learn that form they wouldnt know what they were reading. It doesnt do any harm to learn it in elementary. An d it is that persons choice to use it or not. So, i think we all should learn it. Pretty much all my teachers use it to write on the board and if i didnt learn it i wouldnt know what it would say.

brooke wolfe5 said...

I think people do still need to learn how to write in cursive. You're going to need to know how to write in it when you are signing checks & important things. I don't think they should stop teaching cursive. they should still teach it at a younger age, just like i was when i was younger. People in todays world do need this skill, so when somebody does write them something in cursive they'll know how to read it.

The kids that are coming up and getting older wont be able to write in cursive unless there parents or relatives teach them because from the looks of it there not teaching cursive in school anymore so I think we need to change that.

I don't write in cursive except maybe an l, e or f. but not always. I think mine is sloppy and takes up too much room and at school when taking notes it is very hard to take the time to write in cursive. I can't read it very well, but never have been able to. We were never made to write in cursive and yes, we are the "PC Era" and cursive is not technically needed anymore. Everything is usually typed and signing your name could be a bunch of scribbles or just print all ran together instead of taking up the space to write out your first and last name in cursive.

logana5th said...

I think all people should know to read and write in cursive. I have a hard time reading and writing it. I have been working on my cursive skills due to having to sign my name on drivers license. It seems to me that writing in cursive is much faster than printing the letters out. We get letters from relatives and it always in cursive and sometimes I can't read it. I think its a necessary thing for people to know. I know people sign their pay checks not all people have direct deposit for bill paying not all people trust on line billing and paperless billing. My Philosophy is, don't fade it out we need it for the some of the reason I already stated.

Sowens1 said...

I feel like cursive writing is still important and should still be taught. I still use cursive when I'm writing for a long time or sometimes taking notes. But it does make sense that children growing up now may not need this skill because of computers. So much school work is done on computers now to where typing is more important than writing.

I don't believe we need to write in cursive, I remember my 3rd grade teacher telling us that we needed to be able to write in cursive when we go to High School. That was a big lie. We only write in cursive when signing our names. Other than that it's pointless and it needs to die out, its a waste.

My thoughts on this matter are a mixture. I do believe that my generation needs cursive, but only when we are signing our signatures. That is for identity reasons. Print is just something that is easier and readable, why try to over complicate things?
