Music Festivals Take Center Stage

The Wall Street Journal recently posted this article about the music industry.  Read this article and answer the following.

Describe your usage and buying habits from the music industry.  Have you attended any concerts this year?  If yes, explain what you attended..... was it one band or several.  Why did you choose to attend that concert?  Was the concert worth the cost?   Second, if you have not attended any concerts explain why... costs? don't like concerts? other?  Third, discuss do you listen to the radio for music, Pandora, pay to upload songs? buy CD's? Buy vinyl records?  Share with friends?   Fourth-- have you attended a music festival?  If so, what? What were you thoughts about attending that versus a single concert?
What trend does the article see happening in the music industry and how do you believe that might impact you?

i haven't been to any concerts this year mostly because i don't have the time. i have been to them though and like them. i usually buy songs off the internet like i tunes. "According to Pollstar, ticket sales dropped 12% from last year, and gross revenue of the top 100 tours nationally fell almost 13%. That’s 4.8 million fewer tickets and a $300 million decline overall."

It’s April, and near triple-digit temperatures are baking the desert around Indio, Calif. But that’s not stopping more than 100,000 fans from descending upon the Empire Polo Club for a weekend of dancing, debauchery and decibels. I like how loyal the fans are to go out there in the blazing weather and enjoy themselves.

But i really like to see Linkin park play. I usually listen to them on the internet or on t.v.

I haven't been to any concerts before mostly because they are so expensive. I use Pandora on m ipod and get songs off the internet. Pandora has a lot of music on it and a bunch of different genres of music. iTunes is a good place to get music too because there is such a wide variety of music on it for only 99 cents per song.

I buy a lot of cds. I like having them in my hand rather than just on my phone. I have not attended and concerts this year but that is because I have just not had the money and neither has my mom. I have went to 10 concerts in the last 3 year though. I always usually go for one band concerts. Of course they have an opening act and usually another performer and then you have the main performer. I choose to attend concerts because it is a very memorable experience that I will always remember. I like to go so I can hear my favorite artists live and get close to them and really get a feel for their personality. Yes all the concerts i have been to were worth it because I had a lot of fun and at every concert something different happened and I create experiences I'll never forget. Concerts are amazing.

No I have never really attended a musical festival. I would like to but I have just never had the chance. I don't think I would like them that much though because I don't like all types of music and at festivals I just don't think they would have the music I like but it would still be fun to go and see what they did have.

The trend is that they see that concert sells are decreasing and people are paying more to see more bands rather than a single headliner show. It makes more sense but not if they have no one there that you actually like. I don't think it will really affect me because most of the artists I like still go on headlining tours but then again it might because I know sometimes I wanna go to concerts but I decide not to because it only has one person I like playing and the rest I don't know. So maybe it will affect me.

I usually just buy cds. I don't have an ipod so I don't need to buy songs and I just get songs for free off of apps on my phone.

The concert fans are getting smaller and smaller because of the economy and i haven't been to a concert in years because i have not really had time but i would really like to get to one here really soon. Usually concerts sellout and they don't sell anymore ticket because of people being crowded and people trying to enjoy themselves like Hanna says. “People there were very loose because they were there to enjoy themselves.”

Honestly, I get free music off the internet. I don't like buying CD's because I will probably only like one song on the CD. Why would I spend twenty dollars on one song when I can make a mix CD for free with songs I like on it. I haven't attended any concerts this year, but I'm totally going to Warped Tour and XFest, I love listening to the radio because it's like a random shuffle on a ipod, but I have no selections. I don't know why, but I love it. I have never attended a music festival. I have never even heard of them... It won't really effect me all that much as long as I have my radio(:

Some teen entrepreneurs are borrowing strategies from the pros. Josh Bostick started Josh’s Car Wash Service at age 14, driving around his Flower Mound, Texas, neighborhood in a golf cart toting $20 in sponges and soap he bought at Wal-Mart.

i love how he started his own car wash service most teens do not like wash car these days and it is good he just not sitting around doing nunthing like some kids these day now people don`t have to sit in the car why they get there car wash just love he want better in life then most kids and he make a good head of money don`t have to go ask his mom and dad for money no more.....

The way listen to music is ipod, cds, radio so i if i got at least one of those there is no need for concerts really.

Even though I have never heard of these events, I can relate to this article. Last September I attended X-Fest with my cousin. Even though I don't listen to "heavy rock music" I went anyways. I knew one song but one of the bands, and I thought I wouldn't enjoy it. But when I got there it was amazing. People were jumping around and having fun even if they didn't know the band. I crowd surfed for the first time and many times after. It was so much fun and I understand why these people go to concerts even if they do not know the bands. It is just a positive atmosphere where you can have fun and be yourself.

i have been to concerts in the past but not lately cause i just have to much stuff to do but i usually put song off a cd on to my lap top and i put them on my ipod or i just go on youtube to here the songs i want to here if they not on my lap top of something but concerts just have not had the time..

I agree that festivals are taking over it makes more sense, it lets bands get together, lets people get what they pay for with a hundred bands for 300$. It just makes sense, although underground bands that you can meet and touch during the concert is as unforgettable as a weekend listening to 30 bands you've never met.

I was unable to find a job this summer. The reason this happened because I was stalling and hesitating, but I was also looking for one, because the majority of hiring businesses acquire for you to apply online. I feel that the economy hasn't impacted by desire to find a job, because I've had family that helped me with a couple of items that I've needed for the summer.

I have attended a concert this year. It was a Lil Wayne concert, I enjoyed myself while I was there. It wasn't a band concert, the concert had Rick Ross, Keri Hilson, and other rappers from Young Money/Cash Money, Birdman was there also. The reason I went is because Lil Wayne is my favorite artist, and my uncle paid for my ticket, the price was $94, thats alot of money for a concert ticket. I download my songs from an online source, such as datpiff.com. I didn't attend any music festivals during the summer.

They'll come out weather it is 10 degrees out or 100 degrees out. i have been in bands and played shows so i know it means alot to the band and the venue when fans come out.

The eEmpire Polo Club has became the Woodstock of the entertainment generation.

Music is a good way to let loose and be yourself for an hour or two. Music has became a big part of peoples lives. There are places all over the world where you can go two for a concert. And concerts take place more often than the used to. The more concerts, the more fans. So, the music career is BOOMING. And that makes teens like me happy(: All the festivals and concerts gives us access to more music easier.

Its not surprising to me that ticket sales are dropping. Concert tickets are really a pure waste of money. yeah you get to see a band live, but thats all your paying for, is to get to walk in, watch them play a couple songs and leave. When you buy a 70 dollar concert ticket. The only thing you can do with that is get in to see them. You do not get food or anything to drink or there cd or nothing. The only way i go to a concert is if someone takes me. I think theres the biggest waste of money paying someone 70 dollars to come watch them. Really? Why should i have to pay to use my eyeballs watch someone play an instrument. Its just not right to me.

I'm not to technical i'd do jus fine with a cd player some head phones and all my cds. i cant sit thru a whole concert its just not my scene but i could sit in a cafe or dinner hall all day and listen to a band play or poet while hain dinner or drinking on a latte.

Most of my purchases from the music industry is guitars and amps. I will occasionally purchase a CD, but most my music is downloaded through things like iTunes. Unfortunately I have not attended a concert yet this year. The reason I didn't attend the ONE concert I wanted to this year was because no one would drive me to Cleveland. I don't listen to the radio anymore for music, I will buy albums online and buy CD's. I have bought a few Vinyl's. Lately, some of the music I am hearing for the first time have been graciously passed along by friends with awesome tastes in music. I have attended a festival. Attending a single concert guarantees you a good band (if you are the one who picked the concert), but going to a festival is like a gathering almost. To see multiple good musical acts and meet new people and gather up with old ones. The trend the article is talking about is basically a slow decay of the single concert scene. This will only effect where I will play. I personally would want to play festivals rather than a single concert.

Have been to many concerts this year. I've seen Poison, Motley Crue, Def Leppard and Kid Rock this summer and it was deffinatley worth the cost. I do listen to the radio and I buy all my music on itunes unless i really want the cd.
