"How Stores Lead You To Spend"

Wall Street Journal, recently posted this article about strategies used by stores to get us to spend our money.  Do you think these strategies work?  Which strategies work most on you?  Do you think its fair they use these strategies?  Would you use these type of strategies if you had your own business.

This article is due Friday, September 16th.

I know what you mean everytime I walk into a store I walk out with at least triple the amount I wanted to spend. It's like stores are the predator and we are the prey. They always keep things in the front window to catch peoples eye. Even my dad sometimes and he hates shopping, but something reels him in,

alex peguero4 said...

yea i will use that stratigy because it gets people to buy more stuff and it will make more cells i mean i like shopping every time i see something new i want it cuz i like new stuff. ill be the first one to a store if i herd about something new coming out but yea ill will us the stragies they use i like that strategies they did its asome

obviously , the strategies are working if there making people spend their money. if i had my own business i would be using advertising and selling goods that i know people would buy or that they need.

The strategies these stores use are very good indeed. They continually bring in consumers and keep them buying more and more. These strategies, honestly do not work on me because i tell myself before i go in that im only getting the stuff i need. They do a very good job in trying to get me to go into the store but not buy anything. I don't go by the way stuff looks and is arranged. I buy, based on price and in the long run im positive that will help me succeed in life and save more money.I'll admit that if i was to own a store, of course i would use these strategies. They bring in consumers to make purchases. Which is where i bring in my profit. I don't think its wrong to use these if it was wrong it would be illegal. So more power to any business that tries to use these.

I do think that the strategies stores use to attract people do work. The strategies that work most on me is the way they sit up displays in certain areas. When I leave a store I always come out with more than what I went in to get. I think that it is fair they use the strategies that they do because with out them they probably wouldn't make as much money as they do to day with all the things they put in the window to catch your eye and the huge displays in the middle of the isle with such "low" prices when you could probably go some place else and get it twice as cheap. If I had my own business I would use some of the strategies the other stores use but also some of my own to make my store unique.

if i had a store i would def use these stragies you would be a dumb man not too. because it works even in the artcile a store owners says he dosent shop like his costumers do because he knows the tricks. shoppers dont really know how to shop there like buyers . theere not self dicipline. its worst in kids we all impulsive buy sometimes because the stores suckers us in. but i wont fall victim and make a rich man richer.

For the stores selling clothes, shoes, and bags with brands and other stuffs, yes, their strategies work. The more popular the brand name is, the higher you'd have to pay for each item. I mean, it's not rocket science to figure out that these companies are trying to get as much money as possible out off of the buyers pockets. I'm not the type of person that would buy something so expensive even though it doesn't really look good on me just cause it's from a popular brand. I wear what I think looks alright to me, what feels comfy and what I can afford, branded or not. But I think it's a cleaver strategy that most companies use because obviously, many people are buying off of their products. If I had my own business, I'd probably use the same strategies as what's been said on the article. Who doesn't want to gain 2x money as it's originally cost? I know I do!

I do think these strategies work, i mean if they didn't then not as many people would want to shop there. They have to catch peoples 'eye' some how to make their business run & get money. The strategies that work best on me is when stores have a cool way of setting up stuff in the front window, thats what makes me want to go into stores & shop. When i leave a store i usually come out with more stuff than i originally planned. It is fair that stores use the strategies they do use because without it, stores wouldn't attract as many people without it. Using strategies to attract peoples 'eye' will benefit the store by getting money, & they need money to still run the store. If i had my own business, I would deffinately use some of my own unique ways to catch peoples eye, so they would come into my store & so I could earn money to keep it going. (:

yes these strategies do work because they are attracting people, which means they are making money. the strategies that usually work on me are when stores have good sales. and it fair that they use these strategies because its their way of making money, and if they didnt make money then the store wouldnt be open. and i would use these strategies because its a good way to attract people and to make money.

I do think their strategies work. They keep their store neat so its easy to shop in and easy to find things. They also draw you in by calling you out and keep talking until you look at their product and they tell you how great it is.

The strategies they use do work. The Strategies used work most on me would be the deals like 5 for $20 & or showing how the clothes look on the manicans. I think If they wanna make money it's completely fair because they're bringing in customers. I'd switch the strategies up just a little but yes i would.

taylormorgan66 said...

when you walk into a store they always have it ooking nice and clean with sale sign which makes you think your spending less when your actually spending more.

Honestly I think that the strategies work. But i think that the people that use these strategies will be more observed, and understand the world more.. Some people don't know how the people (government) works. I think the people can still spend their money. So... i think the plan is working.. That's my opinion about these strategies..

Yes, I believe that these strategies work. I also think it is fair to use these strategies because they're businesses that are trying to earn money by spending money on the products that they've bought. I would use these strategies too, because I would want to have money for my business and without the money needed to keep my business going, well then I guess it's gone.

danielleg5 said...

yes, of course these strategies work? if they're spending there money {$$$] ! if i had my own business i would deff use these strategies, i would be using advertising and selling goods that i forsure know people would buy. you cant be selling ragggedy stufffff, gotta stay swagggggin ! (;

Stores use this strategy to obviously attract customers. I used to work at Pacsun, so i know how things work and how you position the items to catch a customers eye. Since i've worked in retail i do not fall for their tricks, also i'm cheap and don't like spending money....hahaha.

Owner Frasier Ross stratigically plans his stores' layout to quickly lure in the shoppers with quick hit gifts and guide them to the more expensive fashions and jewlery to the back.

i think that frasier ross has a perfect stratigy. and not only does that stragity work, it also helps to put things that kind of go together in the same section of the store. for example. put shoes with shoe laces. and the laces are there, so why not buy them? (:

Corey Estes 6 said...

The strategy that most companies use is very effective and most people fall for it, but i've learned not to by just going and getting what i wanted and thats about it, i occasionally look at stuff i like, but i'm never influenced to buy anything.

jon adams6 said...

Its amazing that going into a store an just want to get one thing an then getting side tracked an you see another item an you say man i want that too.

aquilese4 said...

Honestly I think that the strategies work. But i think that the people that use these strategies will be more observed, and understand the world more.. Also they advertise and catch people eyes by putting stuff on windows and posters some of my family doesnt even like shopping sometimes cause of it....

Kyle Kaution Mobley said...

I think when a store has a big sale it gets alot more business, everyone knows that, stores with cloths that cost over 50 for 1 item does not get much business, if they was to cut that price in half they could make money, something that makes me want to go to a store is the 50% off

todjnemilton1 said...

yes i think these strategies work because it always get peoples attention especially when they put expensive new toys in the windows to get the little kids to want them and have a fit till they get them. yes this strategy does work for me because when i see something i really want go in and get it if i see something else i have my grandma or aunt get it for me. and i do think its fair because thats how they get a lot of business. and if i was a business person i would use the same strategies.

Sowens1 said...

These strategies definitely work. I don't blame these stores for doing so because I would do the same if i owned a business. I have noticed how different store's setups look different around the holiday seasons. I am most guilty of being lured into a store because of what i see in the display windows. I end up buying much more than i expected to when i walk out of the store.

Anonymous said...

I have not been to a store using these strategies, but i think they would work most of the time. especially around holidays. if i was owning a buisness, i would use strategies like those to attract more customers. I dont get sucked into buying things just because they are cute. I only buy things i really like and need. I always ask my self "Will i ever use this?" "What will I wear it with or to?" I'm just not big on spending money on something i"ll use once. I even buy my homecoming dresses for $30, because chances are, they'll never be worn again.

Tiara Coldiron 5 said...

I think that these strategies work because if they didn't they would not make as much money. I use some of these strategies for example when i see something in newspapers on t.v i want it. And they put things in the window for people to look and want to come in side there store and buy things. I go into a store for one thing and come out with more then that. I think it is good because they do it to make money.

Anonymous said...

I would use that strategy if i had a business because i fall for that and i know people would too. When i go into stores i always come out with stuff that i dont need but now i try not to spend money on stuff that i dont need.

frongia1 said...

Yes I think that these strategies work because a lot of people don't know about these strategies and they get convinced into spending money they hadn't planned on spending. The strategies that work most on me are probably when I think I am getting an item at a good price because it says it is "on sale" but really I'm just paying the price they want me to. They just raise the price to make it seem like I am getting a good deal. Also another strategy is putting items where I can see them but I am not in the store because a lot of the times I see something that interests me and I am not even in the store yet but that spark of interest reels me in to the store. I think it is fair to use these strategies because businesses have to make certain quotas. They are just doing their job and if they didn't then eventually they would make no profit and stores would go out of business. They strategies have to be used. Yes, i would use these strategies because they confuse people and people buy things they never would have if they knew the tricks that businesses use against them. It's not nice to do but it's business.

marykatew4 said...

I can relate to this because I like to shop. When i see an outfit already put together it makes me want to buy more than just a shirt. I end up buying a skirt, leggings, a purse and maybe even accessories to go with. The little things next to the register always get me too. This article make me want to be more careful when I shop.

Andrew Gentry4 said...

These strategies are very clever, because it seems like whenever i go into a store i leave with something. They just know how to advertise good. Its like bait with a fish and im hooked. And i need it. Its a gain for me and whoever i bought it from, they are making money and im gaining a item that i either wanted or needed or will need.

rkessler13 said...

Every time people walk into the store they have what is on sale right there and most people always need the object so they buy it. Also, most stores have the most common goods on sale so that people will buy them faster so that people walk out with more than need cause everything in on sale.

wyattc27 said...

When most people go to the stores they have their minds set on only buying the thing they went there for but the stores put things on sale and make things look like the person needs to buy it and they persuade the customer to buy their products. me myself i buy more than what i went for everytime i go to the store, i just feel like i need more than what i have written down so it works.

keekee123 said...

most stores lower there prices some so that way they can get more people to buy there products. i myself say that if the price is low buy the product if the price is high say good bye. the stores try to make there money an i understand why they raise the prices but people dont have the money these days to try an spend alot of money on one thing an thats just my opinion.

TShields5 said...

Our country is starting to have some stores that have cheaper food prices like save-a-lot, wal-mart etc. That helps our country out a lot.

JuliusWilliams6 said...

I think the stratigies will because people will just anything now a days without a second thought and the stratigy the stores are using now still works and it will continue to work.

Stacy Mullins6 said...

When i walk past a store and something catches my eye in the window or i spot something out it brings me into the store so their strategies do work. People do what it takes to bring in money so you cant be mad. If i ran a business store i would do whatever to bring in that money.

These things really do work!
Every time I go in the store every one is in the back for the most expensive stuff, because everyone has it! Mostly the cheap stuff catches everyones eyes especially if its in front but as you get further and further you find all the name brand stuff for way more then what you want to spend! But you got to have it, cause all the artists and everyone else has on.

donaldcrew6 said...

If i was a store owner I would do the same thing because if it makes me money. If thats the only thing to do to get people in the door i would do it. They start off by looking at the cheap stuff for someone else then they see the nice expensive stuff and they just have to have it. Thats a brilliant idea.

Kelley Mae 6 said...

Their strategies do work. It's always good that the store attracts customers by having samples of things. That makes them want to try it and then purchase it. Also by having models wearing new clothes, etc

soniajuarez6 said...

obviously that these strategies are working!! we see people spending their money at any store everyday...of course that i would also use these strategies if i had store, these is what helps these stores make some good money, as soon as you walk into a store you see the cutest outfits on display and these makes us want to buy them. In my opinion these are very smart strategies that the stores use.

I would use these stragies if i had my own store. they work like if something new was to come out you will see alot of people out that day and trying to buy it.. stores keep things out so people can see and the people like and they buy.. but i don fall for that i can wait untill everything is on sell.. but people fall for it and now there broke and the rich is getting richer..

My family has worked in retail and we know how the stores raise there prices at the holiday season and pretend they are having a big holiday sale when the sale price is still higher than the rest of the year. I like the idea of the cheaper little holiday teasers it makes it easier for kids to buy for the friends and family, and not spend a fortune.

there are alot of stratigies in this world & they all do their part . a perfect example is when you try to buy shoes & they try to put in special heels , force fields , & special laces . no matter if i go into the store & say to my self "i only want the shoes" i walk out with a pair of socks & some shoe cleaner . so is it fair ? for the weak minded like me , i say no .

I believe that stores use similar strategies to attract customers, depending on age. Famous people advertising for commercials are typically what convince people to buy a product,or cartoons can be used to convince kids to buy something. If I owned a business then I would definitely use these strategies to get people to buy whatever I'm selling. It would help me make money and it would give consumers the desired product.

adamraver6 said...

the stragery wouldn't work in my opinon, because a customers 'eye' needs to be catched when trying to sell product. I cool way I get drawed into a store would be the front window or atore has something related to the store on but yet creative. Like at Guitar Center, they sell extremely nice guitars and also the front of the store looks pretty sweet with huge Guitars.

The way stores are laid out are meant to make you spend more money. All the major requriments, like food and grocerys are in the back when you have to pass up all this junk food, cool electronics, and toys. Its no wonder people spend more money. There is a science to the lay out of a store.
